Quintana Roo State of Mexico

Quintana Roo is one of 31 states of Mexico, located in the eastern region of the Yucatan Peninsula. To the north of Yucatan state, north and west to the state of Campeche, on the east by the Caribbean Sea and Belize to the south.

The area that now constitutes the state of Quintana Roo was part of the state of Yucatan, and therefore shares the same history. During the War of castes, independent Maya nation of Chan Santa Cruz was established in the present town of Felipe Carillo Puerto, in the state of Quintana Roo. The Mexican government regained control of these regions at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1902, by decree of the President, was created the territory of Quintana Roo was separated from Yucatan. In 1915 it joined again in the state, but in 1931 was finally separated as the territory of the federation. It earned the status of state of the federation on October 8, 1974.

The main economic activity is tourism. In Quintana Roo are the beaches of Cancun, Cozumel Island, Playa del Carmen, and Xcaret Eco Park. There are also tour to the "Mayan riviera", which includes numerous Mayan archaeological ruins. Quintana Roo region was one of the most populated areas during the maximum of the Mayan civilization.
